"And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:17). That is the foundation that the 1915 Church Council was laid upon when called to unite at the request of Homer Smith, Mr. & Mrs. Brown, Mr. & Mrs. J. M French and J. L. Burns to organize the Mascot Baptist Church. The church was built and ready for service in 1916. Brother J. L. Burns served as the first Pastor of the church.

In 1935, MBC was tragically struck when the church caught fire. Services were held at the Mascot Elementary School until the church could be rebuilt in 1936. Ten years later a baptistry was installed. Until this time, baptismal services took place at various churches in the community or in the nearby creeks and rivers. In 1950, additional Sunday School rooms were added on to the back of the church and in 1962 a front porch and a steeple were added on, and for the next few decades the church continued to make improvements and grow under the leadership of 13 pastors and a couple of interim pastors.

In 1985, Rev. Lewis E. Thomas, Jr. became the 22nd Pastor and would go on to became the longest-residing Pastor in the church's history, serving here for 38 years before retiring in 2023. During his tenure, in 2004, the church added over 4,000 square feet to the building with the construction of a new Fellowship Hall. MBC would also celebrate its 100-year anniversary with a commemorative worship service on September 18, 2016 (pictured).
What began as a mining town in the early 20th Century has now become home to several hundred families of all shapes and sizes. While many of these families have grown up and spent their lives here, new developments in our town in recent years have also brought many new families to our community, including our current Pastor, Zach Barnhart, whose family came to MBC in May of 2024. As the landscape of Mascot changes, we are excited to see how the Lord will use MBC in our next chapter of ministry, from one generation to the next, to the praise of his glory.
